Guide

Can you see who unfollowed you on X?

Short answer

Not on X itself. X doesn't notify you when someone unfollows you, and it shows who follows you now, not who left. To find out, compare your follower list at two points in time: by hand for a small account, with two X data archives, or with a tracker that records every change from the day it starts.

X doesn't tell you, or them

X's Following FAQs are plain about it: “X does not send a notification when you unfollow someone.” The rule works both ways, so nobody is told when they lose a follower, including you. New followers are different: by default X emails you when someone new follows you.

So follows are announced and unfollows are silent. On X itself, what you see is a lower follower count and a name missing from your followers list, which you only notice if you remember it was there.

A lower count isn't always an unfollow

X's help pages give other reasons a follower count goes down, as of October 2026:

  • Locked accounts. X removes locked accounts from follower counts, so if an account that follows you is locked, your number can drop (Following FAQs).
  • Spam and deactivation. A follower you were notified about can vanish from your list later because the account “was hidden for spam activity, unfollowed you, or deactivated their account”. The same page says that turning off the quality filter shows your full list, suspected spam accounts included (Help with common following issues).
  • Your own actions. Blocking an account stops it from following you, and on the web you can remove a follower without blocking them (Following FAQs).

Free ways to find out who unfollowed you

To know who unfollowed you, compare your followers at two moments. These ways cost nothing:

1. Compare your followers list by hand

For a small account this is the simplest way. Open your followers list, save a copy of the names in a note or a few screenshots, and compare it with the list a week later. It needs no app and no permissions, and it stops being practical once the list runs to a few hundred names.

2. Compare two X data archives

The archive X lets you download includes “a list of your followers” (How to download your X archive). Request it under Settings and privacy, Account, Your X data; X emails you when it is ready. Request it again a few weeks later and compare the two follower lists. Anyone in the first list and not in the second unfollowed you, or was removed, blocked, locked, hidden for spam or deactivated in between. It is slow and manual, but free, and the data comes from X itself.

3. Before you connect an unfollow app

A third-party tracker does the comparison for you, but it needs access to your account. With read access an app can see the people who follow you and the people you follow; with write access it can follow and unfollow people for you (About third-party apps and log in sessions). X's advice on the same page: be cautious before granting access, connect through X's own authorization screen rather than typing your password into an app, and review connected apps in Apps and sessions, where you can revoke them. X also says to avoid apps that promise you a lot of followers, because they “usually violate our Terms of Service and may lead to account suspension” (Following FAQs).

Past unfollows are out of reach

Whatever you choose, the history starts with your first snapshot. X shows no list of past unfollows, so there is nothing to rebuild last month from, and a tracker can only report changes after its first look at your followers. If you think you will want to know later, save a list today.

What an unfollow tracker adds

The xInsightss unfollow tracker automates the comparison. Its follower watch checks your follower count every ten minutes, compares your whole list when the count drops, and runs the same full comparison every six hours (less often from 10,000 followers), so an unfollow hidden by a new follow is still caught. Every account that leaves goes into a dated list, marked when someone left after following you.

Like any tracker, it records changes from the day its follower watch starts, after your first import. The follower watch is on every plan; there is no free plan, and the 7-day Pro trial needs a card.

Questions

Can I see who unfollowed me on X?

Not on X itself. X doesn't notify you of unfollows and shows only who follows you now. Compare your followers list at two points in time: by hand, with two X data archives, or with a tracker that saves your list and records each change.

Is there a free way to see who unfollowed me on X?

Yes, two. Compare your followers list by hand against a saved copy, or download your X data archive twice and compare the follower lists inside. Both are free and need no third-party access; both are slow for a large account.

Does X notify someone when I unfollow them?

No. X's Following FAQs say: 'X does not send a notification when you unfollow someone.'

Can I see who unfollowed me before I started checking?

No. X shows no history of past unfollows, so every method, a tracker included, only covers changes after its first look at your followers list.

Why did my follower count go down if nobody unfollowed me?

X removes locked accounts from follower counts, and accounts hidden for spam or deactivated drop out of your list. Blocking or removing a follower lowers the count too.

Are unfollow tracker apps safe?

Check what an app asks for before you authorise it: read access lets it see who follows you, write access lets it follow and unfollow for you. Connect through X's own authorization screen rather than typing your password into the app, and review or revoke apps in Settings under Apps and sessions. X warns that apps promising lots of followers usually violate its Terms of Service.
